Dr. Orestes Marangos was born in Nicosia, Cyprus and is a Research Fellow in the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics of the Cyprus Institute of Technology (CUT). Orestes began his studies at the Higher Technical Institute in Cyprus where he earned the Diploma of Technician Engineer in the field of Civil Engineering. Orestes graduated with the Best Aggregate Performance in all subjects studied in the Civil Engineering Course and also received the award for best project in Civil Engineering. He continued his education in the United States of America and earned his B.Sc. and M.S. degrees from University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2002 and 2004 and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Kansas (with honors), in civil engineering in 2010. During that time, Orestes reached the Dean’s List and was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Student Award for two years. During his post-graduate studies he received the prestigious Chancellor’s Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Fellowship Award, which supported his research for two consecutive years (2005-2007).
Orestes’ doctoral dissertation was centered on the non-destructive characterization of the dentin structure relevant to composite restorations, using scanning-acoustic microscopy. As a result, he gained a background on the biology and structure of biomaterials such as bone and dentin as a complement to his core engineering discipline. Before returning to Cyprus, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Bioengineering Research Center of the University of Kansas where he collaborated with a multidisciplinary team of researchers on several projects with the overarching goal being the improvement of the mechanical performance of dental composite restorations.
Dr. Marangos’ research interests cover a variety of areas, their central theme being the behavior of mechanical wave-fields in heterogeneous media and he has over 10 years of research experience in wave propagation through complex materials with imperfect interfaces and near-surface graded layers both in measurement and modeling with applications to non-destructive materials’ evaluation. He has significant experience in the constitutive modeling of overall properties of materials with microstructure using micromechanical approaches.
So far, Dr. Marangos has 13 journal publications in high impact journals, 7 conference proceedings, 4 book chapters and 13 conference presentations. Orestes is a current member of the Cyprus Scientific & Technical Chamber and of the American Association of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and a past member of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the American Geophysical Union (AGU). He is also a member of Tau Beta Pi (2002) and Chi Epsilon (2008) honor societies.
