The project OCEAN (Coordinator – Paul Christodoulides) was funded by the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation. The major theme of this project was that of extreme water waves, namely tsunamis, storm surges, and rogue waves. Scientists have been studying water waves for more than 150 years. The aims of the project were to: (1) Improve the present knowledge of tsunami processes, with the special emphasis on avoiding false alarms; (2) develop improved models for wave impact due to storm surges and tsunamis in coastal zones including breaking on all forms of coastal critical infrastructure; (3) provide an increased understanding of the formation of extreme waves, especially in near-shore zones.
